Welcome

Journeying together in community, embracing the inherent dignity of all, living the transformational love of Jesus

Who We Are

We are a welcoming, prayerful, and active community committed to living out Jesus’ message: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27)

Located in Spotsylvania Courthouse, Christ Episcopal Church has been a vibrant part of our community since 1841. We are a diverse group of individuals—from babies to seniors, singles, couples, and families—who come together in faith and fellowship. While we are growing, we remain small enough to genuinely know and support one another.

We seek to be a place of peace, comfort, and hope, where we “strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being” (BCP, 305). Our commitment to serving both our immediate and broader communities is central to who we are.

Building relationships is important to us. Fellowship often begins at our post-worship gathering known as coffee hour, but it doesn’t end there. Social activities, workshops, and outings help us grow together in friendship and faith.

Outreach is at the heart of our mission. Through our various volunteer programs, we actively support the greater Spotsylvania community. Our Food Pantry serves over 1,500 families each year, while our Pantry Garden provides over 400 pounds of fresh vegetables to those in need. Our Thrift Shop offers gently used clothing, household goods, and furniture at affordable prices. Additionally, we sponsor several scout troops to support the growth and development of young people in our community.

Come and join us! If you are looking for a community where faith is lived and shared, if you feel called to a closer relationship with the Episcopal Church, or if you are seeking opportunities to give back, we would love to hear from you. Please call our office at 540.582.5033 (Tuesday-Friday 10:00-4:00) or complete this inquiry form so we can get to know each other. Someone will reach out to you!

Our Leadership

At Christ Church, we are committed to caring for both the spiritual and practical needs of our parish and the wider community.

  • Fr. Daniel Johnson, OPA – Our Rector and Lead Pastor – leads us in our spiritual life. An Anglican Dominican, Fr. Daniel has served as Rector of Christ Church for more than five years and is deeply cherished by our congregation. His sermons often weave together themes from science fiction films, literature, music, and faith, offering fresh insights and inspiration. Click here to learn more about Fr. Daniel
  • The Parish Administrator, Senior and Junior Wardens, and the Vestry—with guidance from the Rector—attend to the day-to-day and practical needs of our church and its community. These efforts are supported by our Commissions and Ministries which are led by dedicated volunteers whose service reflects the heart and faith of our parish.
Our History

Christ Episcopal Church, located near Spotsylvania Courthouse, has a rich history dating back to 1841 when it was built and consecrated by the ancestors of some current members. During the Civil War, our church served as a hospital and shelter for the wounded and dying at the nearby Bloody Angle battlefield. Despite its role in the conflict, Christ Church was not spared from artillery and rifle fire—the scars remain visible to this day. Our cemetery includes the graves of four members of the Harrison family, who survived the Civil War even though their home did not. To read more about our history, visit Our History.

We are part of the worldwide Anglican community, dedicated to living “lives inspired by [Jesus’] love and teaching and bringing that transforming and sacrificial love into all aspects of society.” We are guided by recommendations from our four instruments: the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lambeth Conference, the Primates’ Meeting, and the Anglican Consultative Council.

Christ Episcopal Church is a proud member of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, one of the oldest and largest dioceses in the Episcopal Church, which includes nearly 2 million members worldwide. Drawing from both Protestant and Catholic traditions, the mission of the Episcopal Church, as expressed in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), is “to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.” (BCP, 855)

Episcopal churches may differ in style and character, but they all follow the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) for their order of worship. We use it every day at Christ Church. Our Sunday readings are drawn from the Revised Common Lectionary, a resource shared with many mainline Protestant denominations.
