Cheryl Moynahan, our dynamic manager, has already hired two assistant managers and merchandise is moving out almost as quickly as it arrives. Donna Markol, Our Thrift Shop Manager, has resigned, due to health reasons. The Vestry will send her a gift in appreciation of her outstanding efforts to make the shop a success. Kari Siner, assistant manager, will be the acting manager until the Vestry decides how to proceed. Days and hours of operation remain the same; however volunteers are especially needed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; please contact Ruth in the church office at (540) 582-5033. July sales generated $3,350.46 in revenue. Any success that comes out of sales comes from you, our volunteers, that help keep the store open and running. Thrift Shop sales slowed in July. Maybe it’s the heat! For the week of July 12th, sales were $701.02. If you have donations, especially decent furniture, please contribute. The parish owes a BIG thank you to Bob Massey and Roy Smith for loading a 14-foot trailer with furniture that wasn’t selling. Bob then took the loaded trailer to the local landfill. Thanks also to Roy and Charles Linton for clearing out unwanted clothing. Donna and Kari want each and every volunteer to know how much they are appreciated. They will be at 8:00 and 10:30, with Christian Education for all ages between the services. We will continue with the planned schedule for the summer months (8 & 10), with children’s church at 10.

Thrift Shop Sales set a record in May with revenues of $5,013.34, the highest since the shop opened in September 2008. The record was set because the shop was kept filled with merchandise, especially furniture and clothes, all month long. Let’s keep this momentum going. Donna and her staff need volunteers to work in the shop and to pick up donations. Of course, donations are always appreciated. Grass growing season needs helping hands

Grass growing season is here; our large grounds always need helping hands. Al Daniels has been mowing weekly and Garrett Paxton continues to trim in this hot weather. Thank you gentlemen! Check out the garden area in back of ASH. Garrett has done a marvelous job of clearing out the weeds. Additionally, the RAAI folks are planting flowers and vegetables in that area and it’s beginning to flourish. Please sign up at the Communications Center to help.

5th anniversary of All Saints Hall’s dedication a great success

Our celebration of the 5th anniversary of All Saints Hall’s dedication was a great success! Lots of kids, activities, food, fellowship and lots of appreciation for Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc. who received the first Christ Church Community Impact Award. RAAI provides services for the mentally and physically disabled and has partnered with the church since 1999. Members of the RAAI board were present, as well as some of their clients and staff. As he presented the award, Senator Edd Houck reminded us that we are commanded to love our neighbors, and that commandment contains no asterisk (i.e., no exceptions). Teri Irvine, our family ministry coordinator, did a wonderful job in planning this event, as did all those who helped. Photos will be online soon.

Dear people of Christ Church, thank you so much for all you have done for me over the past two years. Thank you for the lovely sendoff on Sunday, April 25th, for all of the special gifts, and, most of all, for your love and care for me. I will carry you along with me in my heart as I continue along on my journey. You all have shaped me for my future ministry, and I am thankful. I hope that some of you will be able to attend the ordination to the transitional diaconate on Saturday, June 5, in Charlottesville, VA. I’ll let you know more details as I have them. I am very proud and excited that Father Jeff will be one of my presenters that day.

ECW would like to thank those who donated baked goods and worked at the annual Spring sale last Saturday. Special thanks to Kim Hoffman and her staff at Pine Hollow Nurseries for the beautiful plants they donated as well as to Shirley Pozzato for the many wonderful plants she always brings from her lovely gardens at home. To Shirley and Lydia, a big THANK YOU for selling plants outside under the tents in the cold, drizzly rain. Thanks, too, to Gene DiRusso for picking up the plants, delivering them to the church, and helping to set up on Friday. Finally, to George and Elaine Wyant, who do the bulk of the work for this sale, soliciting vendors, putting up flyers, putting up, and taking down signs, tents, and tables, baking and working the actual sale and selling the left over items on Sunday. Our heartfelt THANKS to all!

Our Christ Church Food Pantry, needs volunteers. The Food Pantry is open on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10 AM to noon. Because we’re currently short-staffed, the Food Pantry is in danger of cutting back its services due to a lack of workers. Decorating Committee

The Fellowship Commission’s Decorating Committee. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming environment for the Great Hall, in ASH. Not only will it be nicer for our social gatherings, but it would help when interested folks come by to take a look at it for possible rental. Over 80 Thanksgiving Baskets Given to Families

On Saturday 11/22 more than 80 families were served in our thanksgiving basket program. Food was provided by our Outreach commission and the Food for Life program. Thanks to the Dudleys who organized the effort and to everyone who helped assemble and distribute the boxes. We will do the same in December for Christmas. Thanks be to God that we have been able to keep up with the fast-growing needs of our neighbors.

The Fellowship Commission is seeking members to be a part of two committees: Landscaping and Great Hall Beautification. Surviving the Economic Downturn: A Program for Our Community

We always need hot and cold cereals, boxes of instant potatoes, spaghetti, canned pasta, vegetables, canned tuna, canned meats, rice, soups and bread. Also, peanut butter, jelly (grape/strawberry) canned fruit, instant pudding, granola bars, and powdered milk. On Sunday, leave bags of food in back pew of church or, during the week, at our church office. Please check your items for expiration dates. We cannot give out expired items. The grocery bags requested are available from Ukrops, Bloom and Target. NOTE: On Tuesday, July 28, the Food Pantry served 49 families, an increase reflecting these tough economic times. Grass cutting season is here and we need some helping hands! Roger Williams, our Junior Warden, has been volunteering his time and mowing the entire church property over the last several weeks. Roger will continue mowing; however, he needs volunteers to assist with trimming around the walks/plants, etc. Tools/equipment will be provided. Education for Ministry Online

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year study that is an extension course of
the University of the South's School of Theology in Sewanee, Tenn. The course
is conducted in small groups and includes in-depth self-study of the Bible,
historic church documents and a look at theologies through history.
Groups meet once a week to conduct a theological reflection, an exercise in
learning how to problem-solve via theological thinking. For busy folks,
EfM is now offered online with parishioner/mentor, Jo Freeman.
This past season's group included students from around the United
States. The conversations are lively and the group becomes amazingly close
despite communicating solely through Sewanee's online classroom and e-mail.
There is room for new students in Jo's group, which resumes in October, and
other online mentors are also seeking students. Contact Jo Freeman at

Thrift Shop may face periodic closings. If we do not have enough volunteers to staff the Thrift Shop it may have to be closed. If you have been thinking about volunteering, now is the time. Even volunteering for a few hours one or two days a month would be a huge help. We have had a very devoted group of volunteers working since we opened, but without minimum staffing we cannot remain open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Speak to Cheryl Moynahan, our manager, about possibly volunteering.

NSWC “adopting” Units in Iraq

Support for Our Troops. The Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren is “adopting” an Army and a Marine unit in Iraq and is collecting useful items for care packages to be sent on May 1, August 1 and November 1. Look for the list of items at the back of the church and in ASH. Bishop Lee to Retire in October

The Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee, Bishop of Virginia, has announced that he will resign as the diocesan bishop effective October 1 of this year. At that time the Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston, current Bishop Coadjutor, will succeed him.

There will be a celebration of Bishop Lee’s quarter century of ministry in our diocese at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, May 30.

Ballroom Dancing in the Great Hall of ASH

Ballroom Dancing in the Great Hall of ASH happens on certain Saturdays 2:00-5:00 PM each month (check out our calendar included in the Chronicler). Jaynes Dancers provides the music and, if needed, some tips on dance steps. Price is $20 per couple and the price will go down if enough couples participate (right now there’s between five to eight couples attending).

This is a chance to get our bodies moving and dance all the classic steps: waltz, rumba, foxtrot. Although church members are always welcome to join the group, the February 28th “Spring is Coming” event will be made even more special because each couple attending is asked to bring finger food and that will make it delectable and more festive.

Bishop Johnston's Jurisdiction Expanded to Include Ordination Process

As of October 1, Bishop Lee will enlarge Bishop Johnston's duties and jurisdiction to include the ordination process, in addition to transition ministry. Bishop Lee will continue to work with current transitional deacons, those who anticipate ordination to the transitional diaconate in 2009 and those in formation to become vocational deacons. Bishop Johnston will have jurisdiction over juniors and middlers in seminary, "special students," the acceptance of new postulants into the ordination process for priesthood and those clergy from other traditions seeking recognition of their orders or ordination.

Golf Tournament Results from June 27

The First Annual Christ Church Golf Tournament was held Friday, June 27th at The Meadows Farm Golf Course. The weather was hot and humid, but the enthusiasm and the fun were plentiful. We fielded 60 golfers, a great number for a first year tournament. The final tally is a net profit of $5,814.00. Wow! Obviously the tournament was a success.

We had three goals for the tournament. 1. Make some money for the church. 2. Have a project that was fun and also brought members of the church together to get to know other members. 3. Field teams from outside the church so we could let them see Christ Church doing God's work from a unique perspective.

The tournament was successful because so many people help in so many ways, and I wish to thank everybody involved for their time, suggestions and hard work.

Yes, there will be a Second Annual Christ Church Golf Tournament, so if you missed it this year, you have plenty of time to get involved for next year. Stay tuned for further details.

A Message from the Presiding Bishop In this Season: Pentecost 2008

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we come to the end of Eastertide and the feast of Pentecost, we shift to an awareness of God present with us in Holy Spirit. The early Church marked that gift as inspiration, fire and language-the breath of ever-new life and the burning desire for ongoing relationship with God. That gift of Holy Spirit keeps us lively and moving, bears us into new territory and challenges unsought.

In this as in every age, we face issues of identity, vocation and mission as members of the Body of Christ. Entering the long season of Pentecost brings our focus to how we, too, will follow Jesus inspired by Holy Spirit. I would like to offer a few reminders about identity, vocation and mission that I shared recently with the people of the Diocese of San Joaquin:

1) Jesus is Lord. In the same sense that early Christians proclaimed that Jesus, not Caesar, is Lord, remember that no one else-not any hierarch, not any ecclesiastical official, not any one of you-is Lord. We belong to God, whom we know in Jesus, and there is no other place where we find the ground of our identity.

2) We are all made in the image of God. Even when we can't see that image of God immediately, we are challenged to keep searching for it, especially in those who may call us enemy.

3) In baptism we discover that we are meant to be for others, in the same way that God is for us. This means that God's mission must be the primary focus, not anything that focuses on our own selves to the exclusion of neighbor. For when we miss the neighbor, we miss God.

4) None of us is alone. We cannot engage the fullness of God's mission alone, nor know the fullness of God's reality alone. Together as members of the Body of Christ, we can begin to try. And the Spirit, burning fire, inspiring breath, and speaking in many tongues, is present in that Body, empowering and emboldening and strengthening our work. Thanks be to God who continually makes us new.

The 2008 Energy Star Small Business and Congregations Awards are open to any small business, congregation, or non-profit which has increased the energy efficiency of its facility through upgrades or energy management improvements during the last two years. It can be a large project, or small. It can be a retrofit or new construction. Preference will be shown to small businesses and congregations that have used Energy Star tools and resources to achieve success. Learn more and download an application form online.

Annual Parish Meeting Results

Christ Church had its annual parish meeting on January 20 with 96 people in attendance.

Three new members were elected to serve three year terms on the vestry. Congratulations to Dana Houck, Roger Williams, and Suzi Zafrano. Thank you to the outgoing members for their years of service –Judy Fristoe, Marv Pixton, and Mark Walker.

If you missed the meeting, there are packets with reports and the 2008 budget available on the Communications Center in All Saints Hall. Father Packard’s address is on the web page.

Discretionary Fund

The Vestry has approved a Discretionary Fund for the Assistant Rector. The purpose of the Discretionary Fund is to provide a fund to cover Christ Episcopal Church expenses that relate to the official duties of the Assistant Rector.

If anyone would like to make a special contribution to the Assistant Rector’s Discretionary Fund, please make checks payable to Christ Episcopal Church and in the memo section, state Assistant Rector’s Discretionary Fund.

New ASH Communications Center

The Christ Church Communications Center is now fully functional. Check it out in the upstairs hallway of All Saints Hall. It includes mailboxes for vestry and commission chairs, a bulletin board, white board, tract rack, and an electronic display.

This will be the place for intra-parish communication. Do take advantage of it to communicate with Vestry and parish commissions.

Additions to our landscaping

Thanks to Jan Massey’s students and members of the Future Farmers of America of Massaponax High School. They added to our landscaping this week.

Daffodil bulbs were planted in memory of Jim Parker. A weeping cherry tree was planted in memory of Jerry Vawter. And as a gift from the Sunlight Garden Club, a P. G. Hydrangea was planted in memory of Julie Pringle.
