Johnny Johnson is a well-known artist in the Fredericksburg area as well as a former art teacher at James Monroe High School. All proceeds from this sale will be donated to Christ Church. Bishop Gulick will visit on Sunday, February 5. He will preside and preach at the 10:30 service, celebrating confirmations, and installing our new Vestry members. The loose plate offering that day will be designated to the bishop’s discretionary fund. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Great Hall. The ECW is asking members to please bring in “finger food” to accommodate those attending. If you have questions, please contact Debbie Garland.

Book Group on Monday, February 6th

The Book Group will meet on Monday, February 6th beginning at 11:30 AM in ASH #8. We will discuss the book Redemption by Leon Uris. Redemption continues the story of the Larkins and the Hubbles from his earlier book, Trinity. It moves from Ireland to New Zealand, and back to Ireland to continue the fight for Irish independence. The Book Group read Trinity in the fall of 2008. Please bring a bag lunch.

The Christ Church Food Pantry continues to feed well over 100 hungry families all year long. The pantry doors are open the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10:00 AM to Noon. We have jobs for able-bodied volunteers as well as for those who prefer sit-down paperwork. Contact Stephanie Smith to find out more. The youth of Christ Church would like to invite you to participate in their Christmas Card Campaign. We are making Christmas cards for wounded soldiers recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center. Please use your extra Christmas cards to say thank you to our military. We will have a wrapped Christmas box at coffee hour to collect your cards. Mary Kovach will deliver them later this month.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the Harvest Festival such a great success on Sunday, 10/30, especially all those who organized, decorated, brought food, submitted a pie or a pumpkin for one of the contests, and helped clean up. The youth presented a very scary Haunted Classroom. Mark Walker provided the music. And a special thanks to Lydia Pozzato for once again leading this event.

Holiday Food Basket Program will provide for 150 families

Our Holiday Food Basket Program will provide 150 families a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal. We are still collecting food. Please leave it in the back pew of the church. In your bulletin will be an envelope if you would like to contribute to this effort. In the past we have depended on the F’burg Food Bank for much of the food. This year we are planning on buying all of it ourselves. Also, sign up at the Communications Center to help pack boxes (Nov. 17 & 18) and distribute (Nov. 19). On October 25th, our Food Pantry served 128 families. We appreciate the many members who have stepped forward to help pack bags. The minimum effective number for volunteers on pantry day is nine and we’re sometimes short. Good Cause Variety Show was a great success!

The Good Cause Variety Show was a great success! We had a blast watching all of the talented performers and enjoyed meeting new friends from Peace United Methodist Church and Resurrection Lutheran Church. We had nearly 100 people in attendance! Thank you to everyone who performed, brought cookies, and helped with set-up and clean-up.

Tenth Annual Car Show was huge success!

The Tenth Annual Christ Church Car Show was a huge success! We had 70 cars entered and made approximately $3,000 for Christ Church. The winner of the gorgeous quilt made by our very own Quilters was Cindy Rooney. Our generous thanks to everyone who gave their time and talent to this event.

The Christ Church Food Pantry really needs a volunteer or two to help pack bags of food. Almost 100 families come into the food pantry every second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The task of packing the bags has become too much for one person. We need YOU to step forward and volunteer to help. You would be packing 50 bags of food at the time and date you choose. It’s very easy, the list of food to put in each bag is posted and someone would train you in the beginning. Please contact Stephanie Smith at ssmith@umw.edu or Tracy Magin for more information.

2010-2011 Christ Church Concert Series starts 9/18

2010-2011 Christ Church Concert Series begins on Sep 18th with Ronny Cox & Friends opening the series. Those of us who saw Jack Williams and Ronny perform last year remember how memorable that concert was. Enjoy concerts of swing, contemporary folk, choral ensemble and renaissance music in the wonderful acoustics of our sanctuary. Tickets are $15 for each concert or $50 for all four. Tickets will be available after services in All Saints Hall or from Ruth in the Parish Office. Check out our website and the September Chronicler for more info.

Vacation Bible School Feedback

Our theme for VBS this year was PandaMania. Our message to all was “God is Wild About Us.” Forty children attended, ages 3-16, and most impressive was the great number of adult and teen volunteers that assisted. Thanks to all for taking the time and effort to support the youngsters of our church. NOTE: Although our VBS students learned many, many things related to God, most importantly of all, they learned that God made you; God listens to you; God watches over you; God loves you, no matter what; God gives good gifts, and God loves you.

Million Reason$ to Give Thanks dinner a great success

The Million Reason$ to Give Thanks dinner on June 5th was a great success. We had over 90 people attend!! It was a great time filled with delicious food, new friends, and lots of laughter. Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who helped, especially Ron Magin and Judy Fristoe. You may still add a thanksgiving to the wall of thanksgivings in the Great Hall.

Foreth Annual “Fairways for Food” Golf Tournament a great success!

The Christ Church Foreth Annual “Fairways for Food” Golf Tournament was a great success! Fifty three golfers played, and had a good time despite the rain toward the end. We made $2,165 for the Church, plus a trunk full of canned goods for the Food Pantry. Thanks to Linda Rooney for providing the sponsorship signs, Ed Strysko for his pens as prizes, and Senator Edd Houck, Kim Hoffman, Henry Howe and Flicko’s for their sponsorships.

We want to start recycling at Christ Church. There are many materials that get thrown out after parish activities that could be recycled. All we need is someone to be responsible for getting the materials to the recycling center regularly. Contact the parish office if you are interested in taking on this ministry of stewardship.

20/20 Campaign seeking capital contributions

The 20/20 Campaign is seeking capital contributions from parishioners to reduce our $1.4 million mortgage principal and service our monthly fees. The second half of our 20/20 campaign is well underway as we strive to meet the challenge of a matching funds goal. An anonymous parish family will match every new dollar pledged with 50 cents - up to a donation of $50,000. However, $25,000 in new pledges is needed before the match begins. You may recall that we had 48 original pledges to 20/20 for a total of just over $152,000. Since the parish meeting in January we now have 12 pledges for a total of $16,300. Only $8,700 more will trigger payment of our challenge grant. If you have not pledged, please consider it. If you have and can consider an increase, please do. The 9th Annual Car Show Was a Big Success! Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this success possible. It was a beautiful day with 82 cars on the grounds and lots of visitors. We made approximately $4,250 for Christ Church. Congratulations to Gil and Randal Wright who won the beautiful Tulip quilt handmade by our very own Christ Church Quilters.

The first concert, in our series, Jack Williams-Ronny Cox held last Sunday, was voted, overwhelmingly by the nearly 85 people attending, AWESOME! Donna Markol, Our Thrift Shop Manager, has resigned, due to health reasons. The Vestry will send her a gift in appreciation of her outstanding efforts to make the shop a success. Kari Siner, assistant manager, will be the acting manager until the Vestry decides how to proceed. 5th anniversary of All Saints Hall’s dedication a great success

Our celebration of the 5th anniversary of All Saints Hall’s dedication was a great success! Lots of kids, activities, food, fellowship and lots of appreciation for Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc. who received the first Christ Church Community Impact Award. RAAI provides services for the mentally and physically disabled and has partnered with the church since 1999. Members of the RAAI board were present, as well as some of their clients and staff. As he presented the award, Senator Edd Houck reminded us that we are commanded to love our neighbors, and that commandment contains no asterisk (i.e., no exceptions). Teri Irvine, our family ministry coordinator, did a wonderful job in planning this event, as did all those who helped. Photos will be online soon.

To Shirley and Lydia, a big THANK YOU for selling plants outside under the tents in the cold, drizzly rain. Over 80 Thanksgiving Baskets Given to Families

On Saturday 11/22 more than 80 families were served in our thanksgiving basket program. Food was provided by our Outreach commission and the Food for Life program. Thanks to the Dudleys who organized the effort and to everyone who helped assemble and distribute the boxes. We will do the same in December for Christmas. Thanks be to God that we have been able to keep up with the fast-growing needs of our neighbors.

Education for Ministry Online

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year study that is an extension course of
the University of the South's School of Theology in Sewanee, Tenn. The course
is conducted in small groups and includes in-depth self-study of the Bible,
historic church documents and a look at theologies through history.
Groups meet once a week to conduct a theological reflection, an exercise in
learning how to problem-solve via theological thinking. For busy folks,
EfM is now offered online with parishioner/mentor, Jo Freeman.
This past season's group included students from around the United
States. The conversations are lively and the group becomes amazingly close
despite communicating solely through Sewanee's online classroom and e-mail.
There is room for new students in Jo's group, which resumes in October, and
other online mentors are also seeking students. Contact Jo Freeman at

Native American Ministry with the Pamunkey Tribe

Representatives of the Native American Ministry team have met several times with Chief Kevin Brown and other members of the Pamunkey tribe in King William County. We are
developing a ministry plan so that parishes throughout the Diocese of Virginia will have the opportunity to work along side of our Native American brothers and sisters. The Christ Church Thrift Shop is open for business on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Hours are 10AM until 4 PM.

Items may be donated during regular business hours. Visit your closets, attics, garages etc. and contribute to our thrift shop. Volunteers are also needed, especially for Tuesdays.

Bishop Johnston's Jurisdiction Expanded to Include Ordination Process

As of October 1, Bishop Lee will enlarge Bishop Johnston's duties and jurisdiction to include the ordination process, in addition to transition ministry. Bishop Lee will continue to work with current transitional deacons, those who anticipate ordination to the transitional diaconate in 2009 and those in formation to become vocational deacons. Bishop Johnston will have jurisdiction over juniors and middlers in seminary, "special students," the acceptance of new postulants into the ordination process for priesthood and those clergy from other traditions seeking recognition of their orders or ordination.

Golf Tournament Results from June 27

The First Annual Christ Church Golf Tournament was held Friday, June 27th at The Meadows Farm Golf Course. The weather was hot and humid, but the enthusiasm and the fun were plentiful. We fielded 60 golfers, a great number for a first year tournament. The final tally is a net profit of $5,814.00. Wow! Obviously the tournament was a success.

We had three goals for the tournament. 1. Make some money for the church. 2. Have a project that was fun and also brought members of the church together to get to know other members. 3. Field teams from outside the church so we could let them see Christ Church doing God's work from a unique perspective.

The tournament was successful because so many people help in so many ways, and I wish to thank everybody involved for their time, suggestions and hard work.

Yes, there will be a Second Annual Christ Church Golf Tournament, so if you missed it this year, you have plenty of time to get involved for next year. Stay tuned for further details.

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we come to the end of Eastertide and the feast of Pentecost, we shift to an awareness of God present with us in Holy Spirit. The early Church marked that gift as inspiration, fire and language-the breath of ever-new life and the burning desire for ongoing relationship with God. That gift of Holy Spirit keeps us lively and moving, bears us into new territory and challenges unsought.

In this as in every age, we face issues of identity, vocation and mission as members of the Body of Christ. Entering the long season of Pentecost brings our focus to how we, too, will follow Jesus inspired by Holy Spirit. I would like to offer a few reminders about identity, vocation and mission that I shared recently with the people of the Diocese of San Joaquin:

1) Jesus is Lord. In the same sense that early Christians proclaimed that Jesus, not Caesar, is Lord, remember that no one else-not any hierarch, not any ecclesiastical official, not any one of you-is Lord. We belong to God, whom we know in Jesus, and there is no other place where we find the ground of our identity.

2) We are all made in the image of God. Even when we can't see that image of God immediately, we are challenged to keep searching for it, especially in those who may call us enemy.

3) In baptism we discover that we are meant to be for others, in the same way that God is for us. This means that God's mission must be the primary focus, not anything that focuses on our own selves to the exclusion of neighbor. For when we miss the neighbor, we miss God.

4) None of us is alone. We cannot engage the fullness of God's mission alone, nor know the fullness of God's reality alone. Together as members of the Body of Christ, we can begin to try. And the Spirit, burning fire, inspiring breath, and speaking in many tongues, is present in that Body, empowering and emboldening and strengthening our work. Thanks be to God who continually makes us new.

Annual Parish Meeting Results

Christ Church had its annual parish meeting on January 20 with 96 people in attendance.

Three new members were elected to serve three year terms on the vestry. Congratulations to Dana Houck, Roger Williams, and Suzi Zafrano. Thank you to the outgoing members for their years of service –Judy Fristoe, Marv Pixton, and Mark Walker.

If you missed the meeting, there are packets with reports and the 2008 budget available on the Communications Center in All Saints Hall. Father Packard’s address is on the web page.

New ASH Communications Center

The Christ Church Communications Center is now fully functional. Check it out in the upstairs hallway of All Saints Hall. It includes mailboxes for vestry and commission chairs, a bulletin board, white board, tract rack, and an electronic display.

This will be the place for intra-parish communication. Do take advantage of it to communicate with Vestry and parish commissions.

Additions to our landscaping

Thanks to Jan Massey’s students and members of the Future Farmers of America of Massaponax High School. They added to our landscaping this week.

Daffodil bulbs were planted in memory of Jim Parker. A weeping cherry tree was planted in memory of Jerry Vawter. And as a gift from the Sunlight Garden Club, a P. G. Hydrangea was planted in memory of Julie Pringle.
